South African Press Association (Johannesburg) - July 30, 2002
The announcement was made during a workshop to determine how best to deal with HIV/Aids in the landlocked country.
Lesotho's Aids Programme Co-ordinating Authority (LAPCA) executive director Dr Mpolai Moteetee told the workshop that the results were culled from a survey that was conducted from a survey among 14000 patients at hospitals and clinics throughout the country.
People between the ages of 15 and 49 years had the highest infection rate while women were most at risk of contracting the disease.
Moteetee said people should change their sexual behaviour because it had led to the high rate HIV infection.
UNDP representative, Scholastica Kimaryo said LAPCA should form a partnership with the UN to deal with the problem.
According to the statistics, 31 percent of Lesotho's population is infected with HIV/Aids making it the seventh worst affected country in the Southern African region.
Botswana has the highest infection rate with 38,8 percent, followed by Zimbabwe (33,7 percent), Swaziland (33,4 percent), Namibia, (22,5 percent), Zambia (21,5 percent), and South Africa (20 percent).
