South African Press Association (Johannesburg) - June 2, 2002
The event will be supported by the Health Department, the National Aids Children Task Team and Save the Children UK. Officials from Zimbabwe, Uganda and Zambia will also attend.
The theme of the conference is "A call for Co-ordinated Action for Children Affected by HIV/Aids".
"The conference seeks to come up with clearly defined mechanisms of ensuring that we move beyond planning to effective implementation of the rights that HIV/AIDS children are entitled to," the statement said.
It said the demand for provision of service and resources to protect the rights of the orphaned and vulnerable children were on the increase.
"Community based initiatives and NGO's engaged in HIV/Aids related work have been established to respond to the impact that HIV/Aids has on children.
"However the challenge is that these interventions are not well co-ordinated and as such not fully efficient. Recommendations and findings of this conference will be forwarded to (the) relevant departments and finally to Cabinet for ratification."
