Wrinkle filler could rival Medicis' Restylane

Reuters NewMedia - December 27, 2006

NEW YORK - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved BioForm Medical Inc.'s Radiesse cosmetic treatment for long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, the company said in a press release on its Web site dated Wednesday.

Privately-owned BioForm describes the drug as an injectable dermal filler used in cosmetic and reconstructive applications.

The Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site earlier on Wednesday that the FDA's approval sparks competing claims over whether Radiesse will prove cheaper and better over time than established wrinkle fillers like Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp.'s (MRX.N: Quote, Profile , Research) Restylane, the dominant player.

San Mateo, California-based BioForm said Radiesse had received a second FDA approval for the long-lasting correction of facial fat loss in people with HIV.
