While HIV blood tests can take hours, the test kit that Rockeby will distribute can detect the presence of the virus in saliva or blood in 20 minutes. The kit consists of a swab that is passed over the gums and then dipped into a vial of solution.
"This is a unique, rapid and convenient test to facilitate the diagnosis of HIV," Tan Sze Wee, Rockeby's Managing Director and chief executive officer, told reporters at a press briefing.
Rockeby's AIDS kit launch on Thursday coincided with World AIDS Day, aimed at promoting awareness of a disease that kills millions each year and is on the rise in Asia.
The company, which is listed on the Australian stock exchange, last month also launched a kit that can detect the deadly avian flu virus in birds and humans in 10 minutes.
Rockeby stock, which plunged from more than A$0.24 in January 2004 to A$0.01 in mid-2005, has shot up more than four-fold to over four Australian cents since announcing the bird-flu kits.
