If the company also wins approval for the drugs themselves, it could pave the way for it to supply anti-retrovirals to a U.S. government $15 billion AIDS funding programme.
The stock gained 5.56 percent to 19.00 rand by 0726 GMT, making it the third biggest gainer on the South African bourse as it outperformed a slightly stronger Johannesburg all-share index.
The company said in a statement it was the first African company to win approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a factory to produce the anti-retroviral drugs.
The United States must first approve any of the generic drugs before using them under its own funding programmes.
Aspen will make the drugs at its plant in Port Elizabeth, and hopes to clinch final FDA approval for the drugs themselves in early 2005.
