Programming and creative directors from 35 media companies including Viacom Inc., South African Broadcasting Corp. and MTV Networks International were among those attending the day-long session, aimed at raising awareness about the epidemic around the world, participants said.
"People in the media are realizing they have to think of more than the bottom line," said Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone, who helped organize the session and said his company had pioneered the idea of the media as a weapon against AIDS.
"We are doing something here that is in the family, and it is a family of people who want to touch the world, want to change things, and have the tools to do it effectively -- to use the time and money and energy and creativity in a positive way," film actor and activist Richard Gere said.
