The lead singer of U2, who has founded an advocacy group for issues affecting Africa and who earlier this year met President Bush (news - web sites) to press his cause, said 500,000 people could die from AIDS in Africa in the next few months who might be able to live if there was money for treatment.
The House of Representatives is due to return from a holiday break next week to clear the spending bill that would provide the first installment for Bush's five-year, $15 billion plan to combat AIDS. But the Senate now appears unlikely to follow suit until late January.
"I'm infuriated to hear the bill hasn't been passed," Bono, wearing his trademark blue wrap-around glasses and chunky soled shoes, said at a packed appearance at the Kaiser Family Foundation, a philanthropic health policy organization.
Bono was among the international stars who put on a musical extravaganza in South Africa last Saturday to raise awareness of AIDS ahead of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1.
