New HIV Cases in Singapore Due to Sex Transmission

Reuters NewMedia - Friday, November 22, 2002

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Sexual transmission was the main source of 189 new cases of HIV/AIDS in Singapore in the first 10 months of this year, health authorities said on Friday. The new cases bring the total of reported cases of HIV infection to 1788 as of October, according to government figures.

About 96% of the 189 new cases were sexually transmitted, while the rest involved needle sharing between intravenous drug users. Three quarters of the sexually transmitted cases involved heterosexual intercourse.

"Sexual transmission remains the main mode of HIV transmission among Singaporeans," the Ministry of Health said. "Heterosexual transmission has been the most common mode of HIV transmission among Singaporeans since 1991. Most of these cases contracted the infection through casual sex or sex with prostitutes in Singapore and overseas."

The majority of Singaporeans infected with HIV/AIDS were single men, while women who were infected were mostly married.

About 84% of those infected were Chinese and 20% worked in the sales and service sector.

More than seven million people live with HIV/AIDS in the Asia Pacific region, according to the World Health Organization.

Singapore has AIDS prevention programs in place and physicians are required to inform health authorities when they diagnose a new HIV case. Foreigners entering the island state of four million to work are also tested for HIV, and those who are infected are sent home.
