The three rights activists, Sanar Yurdatapan of Turkey, Souleymane Guengueng of Chad and Meena Seshu of India, will receive the honors next week.
In Turkey, Yurdatapan has fought attempts to restrict freedom of expression, the group said. He has focused attention on the unjust imprisonment of officials from the country's Kurdish minority and defended indicted publishers, writers and politicians, Human Rights Watch said.
Guengueng is founder and vice president of the Chadian Association of Victims of Political Repression and Crime. He almost died during two years in prison under former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre, and has been a main force behind the case against Habre, who lives in exile in Senegal, Human Rights Watch said.
Seshu is general secretary of Sangram, which works to stem HIV/AIDS in Maharashtra, a state with one of the highest infection rates in India, the rights group said. The group disseminates basic information about HIV and distributes condoms.
