"HIV/AIDS is devastating and its impact is adverse on children. HIV/AIDS is totally changing the lives of many children in Zambia...it eclipses everything," Stella Goings, UNICEF's representative in Zambia, emphasized.
She said many children, burdened with the responsibility of taking care of parents suffering from AIDS, were forced to drop out of school to become bread-winners.
One in five Zambians is living with HIV/AIDS, a pandemic that has orphaned 800,000 children in the past 18 years.
Goings said the UNICEF funds would be spent over five years with some programs focusing on prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
