As many as one in 4,000 transfusions leads to a severe septic reaction and as many as one in 12,000 transfusions can lead to death due to bacterial contamination, Pall said in a release.
"Bacteria are the most common infectious agents transmitted by blood and are a far greater threat to patient health than viruses such as HIV and hepatitis," said Roslyn Yomtovian, a professor at the Department of Pathology for the University Hospitals of Cleveland.
"The Pall BDS gives us a novel approach to address the long-standing problem of bacterial contamination of platelets; a problem that has been eluding us for years," he said in the pall release.
