Bush Names Doctor to Head HIV/AIDS Effort

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush has named Dr. Joseph O'Neill as director of the Office of National AIDS Policy, the White House said on Friday.

O'Neill has been treating HIV /AIDS patients since the early 1980s and is currently acting director of the Office of HIV/AIDS Policy at the Department of Health and Human Services .

In his new position, O'Neill will work with the Department of Health, the Department of State and other federal agencies to develop and coordinate the administration's efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.

O'Neill replaces Scott Evertz, who is joining the Department of Health as an adviser to Secretary Tommy Thompson on international AIDS-related issues.
