Elton John Puckers Up to Model Lipstick

Reuters NewMedia - Friday December 14, 2001

LONDON (Reuters) - He's hardly cover model material, but flamboyant pop legend Elton John is to pucker up as the face of a new lipstick.

The British singer, never one to shy away from outrageous behavior, will help promote cosmetic company MAC's new Viva Glam IV, the latest in a line of lipsticks sold to raise money for the firm's AIDS fund, the company said on Thursday.

John will be joined in the ad campaign by soul singer Mary J. Blige and Shirley Manson, lead singer of the rock band Garbage, MAC said.

The fundraising drive will launch in February with the launch of a "closely guarded" advertising campaign by celebrity photographer David LaChapelle, it said.

The "frosted rose and gold shimmer" lipstick will hit British stores in April, with 100 percent of its $16 retail price going directly to the MAC AIDS fund. MAC's Viva Glam line was created in 1994 and has raised more than $23 million for HIV and AIDS services, the company said.

John, an outspoken AIDS activist and the founder of his own AIDS foundation, said he felt joining forces with MAC would strengthen both organizations' fund-raising abilities.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation has raised about $30 million since its creation. The singer announced earlier this month his latest album, "Songs from the West Coast," would be his last.

After 40 albums and a string of hits -- which have made him of the wealthiest artists in the music business -- John said he was fed up with the record industry.
