Trimeris, which is developing an anti-HIV drug called T-20 with Swiss-based Roche Holding , said its net loss widened to $15 million, or 86 cents per share, from $8.5 million, or 54 cents per share, a year earlier.
Trimeris attributed the wider loss to expenses incurred in the quarter for ongoing Phase III clinical trials of T-20, initiated in fourth quarter 2000, as well as production of drug material for future clinical trials.
T-20 is the first of a new class of anti-HIV drugs called fusion inhibitors, which work by preventing the virus that causes AIDS from getting into the cells it attacks.
The drug could save the lives of thousands of people who fail to respond to conventional therapy. But its big drawback is that patients have to inject themselves, rather than take a pill, since the drug would be destroyed by digestive enzymes.
"Together with our partner Roche, we remain on track to submit T-20 for regulatory approval in 2002," Trimeris said in a release.
