RESEARCH ALERT - Robertson Stephens raises Gilead

Reuters NewMedia - Monday October 29, 2001

NEW YORK, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Robertson Stephens on Monday said it raised its rating on biotechnology company Gilead Sciences Inc. (NasdaqNM:GILD - news) to a "buy" rating from a "market perform" rating, citing regulatory approval for an anti-HIV drug.

Robertson Stephens also said that it expects a loss of $1.28 per share for Gilead for 2001, narrower than the $1.30 per share loss it previously forecast. For 2002, the brokerage expects a loss of 68 cents a share, also narrower than the $1.11 per share loss it expected.

Gilead said on Oct. 26 it received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to use its drug Viread in the treatment of the HIV infection. Robertson said while approval was expected, it may allow for more broad use of the drug than it had foreseen. In early trade, Gilead was upo $2.37 to $70.04 in active dealings.
