Merck Sees Its AIDS Vaccine Proving Effective

Reuters NewMedia - Tuesday December 12, 2000

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Merck and Co. Inc. (NYSE:MRK - news) on Tuesday predicted that its AIDS vaccine, which is still in early studies, will prove effective.

"My feeling and fond hope is that I, or my successor, will some day be in front of you, telling you the efficacy of this HIV program," Dr. Edward Scolnick, head of Merck research, said at its annual meeting in Whitehouse Station, N.J. Scolnick also said its joint venture with Schering-Plough Corp. (NYSE:SGP - news) to co-develop Schering's drug Ezetimibe was showing good results in the laboratory. The two drugmakers earlier this year agreed to develop the Schering medicine, which inhibits the intestine from absorbing cholesterol.

They are also developing a combination product that contains both Ezetimibe as well as a "statin" family cholesterol-lowering drug, such as Merck's Zocor. Scolnick said a trial conducted by Merck showed that combining Ezetimibe with any dose of Zocor reduced "bad" LDL cholesterol another 18 percent beyond Zocor's normal cholesterol-cutting ability. He predicted the combination product could become the most effective cholesterol-fighting product on the market if approved.
