The state-owned Sunday Mail quoted former national middleweight champion Gilbert Josamu as saying he had gone ahead with the October 1986 fight against Briton Chris Pyatt after forging the results of a medical test. Josamu and Zimbabwe boxing officials were not immediately available for comment.
Medical debate has raged for years over the dangers of transmitting the HIV virus that causes AIDS in the boxing ring, where blood often sprays during a fight.
"I resolved to carry on boxing despite the fact that I had tested positive. This was my only means of earning a living," the paper quoted Josamu as saying.
"So I forged the medical results and went to fight Pyatt who beat me on points in a light middleweight contest."
A recent report said Zimbabwe's population was expected to fall from an estimated 12.5 million to 9.5 million by 2025 and 9.3 million by 2050 due to the pandemic.
The southern African country has one of the highest rates of HIV infections in the world, with health officials saying about three million people are either HIV positive or have full-blown AIDS.
The disease kills about 1,700 Zimbabweans every week.
