Cel-Sci says HIV vaccine produces response

Reuters NewMedia - Monday, November 22, 1999

VIENNA, Va., Nov 22 (Reuters) - Cel-Sci Corp. (AMEX:HIV - news) said Monday that preliminary results of a Phase II study suggest that its HIV vaccine for subtype C -- the HIV subtype dominant in Southern Africa, India and China -- is safe and induces immune responses.

Cel-Sci said that its HGP-30W preventive HIV vaccine for HIV-1 subtype C induced both cellular, or T-cell, and humoral, or antibody, immune responses in the study.

The company said it intends to present the final results at an "appropriate" HIV/AIDS conference and/or publish them in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Cel-Sci noted that subtype B is the prevalent subtype in the U.S. and Western Europe, and several HIV-1 vaccines have been tested or are currently being tested in the developing world for that subtype.

The company said that it has no knowledge that there are other HIV vaccines in human studies directed against subtype C.

It noted that earlier this year, the World Bank announced that it was planning to set up a $5 billion fund to help developing countries purchase those HIV vaccines proven to be effective.
