Bristol-Myers wins FDA OK for new use of HIV drugs

Reuters NewMedia - Wednesday September 8, 1999

PRINCETON, N.J., Sept 8 (Reuters) - Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (NYSE:BMY - news) on Wednesday said U.S. regulators have cleared two of its AIDS drugs for use in combination therapies to fight HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the drugs, Zerit and Videx, for use with each other and another type of HIV drug.

Zerit and Videx, which are in a leading class of AIDS drugs known as reverse transcriptase inhibitors, have been cleared for use on their own since the early 1990s.

The two drugs can now be used with two other classes of AIDS drugs -- a protease inhibitor or a non-nucleoside analogue efavirenz.

The company said Thursday's approval reflects the prevailing approach to HIV therapy, which calls for combinations of drugs to fight the virus. Zerit posted sales of about $151 million in the second quarter, while Videx had sales of about $55 million during that period.
