Merck said in a statement clinical tests show the drug, with the active ingredient efavirenz, may be the most important addition to HIV/AIDS treatment since 1996 when protein inhibitors were introduced.
Stocrin is the first drug for treatment of HIV/AIDS which can be used daily in combination with other antiretroviral drugs.
About 150 patients in Sweden are being treated with a combination of substances including Stocrin and for many it has had life-saving significance, the statement said.
The simple dosage is an important factor for HIV/AIDS patients who have complex medication procedures.
"Stocrin has shown to be a valuble addition in our arsenal of HIV drugs. Especially attractive is that the number of capsules per day is low, three, and that this needs to be taken only once per day," said Anders Sonnerborg, virology professor at Stockholm's Huddinge hospital.
"At the same time the drug has at least the same anti-virus effect as protein inhibitors."
Merck Sharp and Dohme also researched and developed protein inhibitors Crixivan.
