DuPont Pharmaceuticals, the drug unit of the industrial giant DuPont, also said the Texas HIV Medications Advisory Committee had recommended Sustiva be added to that state's list of approved drugs. Once a drug is on such a list, most insurers will cover its use by patients.
When approved in Texas, Sustiva will have been approved by 46 states, plus the District of Columbia, for such drug lists. DuPont said Sustiva is also on the Medicaid lists of 49 states and the District of Columbia.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Sustiva in September as part of the agency's fast-track program that speeds up the review process of drugs designed to treat life-threatening diseases.
DuPont said more than 30,000 patients in the United States have begun taking Sustiva since DuPont Pharmaceuticals launched the drug in September. Out of that 30,000, some 8,000 patients receive the drug through the company's expanded access programs, which provide the drug to people for free if their doctors think they would benefit from it.
