Glaxo Wellcome said in a statement the drug will be available to patients failing current regimens with protease inhibitors. Patients must be enrolled in the early access program by their physicians beginning Monday.
"By taking this unique approach to an early access program, we hope to capture some clinical information regarding Agenerase that might help guide future antiretroviral treatment decisions," said Dr. Lynn Smiley, a Glaxo Wellcome vice president.
Agenerase was discovered by scientists at Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq:VRTX - news) of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Glaxo Wellcome said it has been responsible for product formulation, manufacture of the drug, design and implementation of all clinical trials, and submissions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
