Each of the 50 machines owned and installed by a Hong Kong sex products company had sold between 2,000 and 3,000 condoms in the first month of operation, the paper said.
The condoms sell for one yuan (12 cents) apiece, packaged singly in a box. Sales had been driven by the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, the paper said.
Prostitution is rampant in Shenzhen, and its brothels, saunas and pick-up joints attract hordes of men from Hong Kong just across the border.
The China Daily reported last week that 21 people had tested positive in Shenzhen for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
The newspaper on Wednesday said the State Family Planning Commission now planned to get in on the condom machine business and install them in other cities this month.
In addition, the commission planned contraceptive chain stores across China. The chain store logo would feature an intertwined couple in the shape of a heart, their feet forming the letters X and Y -- a reference to ``xing yao,'' Chinese for sex medicine, and symbol of the male and female chromosomes.
Most condoms in China were bought by educated people, the newspaper said. In Guangzhou, a city near Shenzhen, 84 percent of all sexually active single women and 44.1 percent of young mothers used condoms, according to one market research survey cited by the China Daily.
