Vertex Pharma, Glaxo HIV study positive

Reuters NewMedia, Inc.; Tuesday June 30, 7:33 pm EST

NEW YORK, June 30 (Reuters) - Vertex Pharmaceuticasl (VRTX - news) said Tuesday that patients with HIV who received a combination of the investigational drugs Ziagen and Agenerase showed reduced virus after 48 weeks of treatment according to preliminary data from a small Phase II study.

Vertex said that six of nine patients with HIV had less than five viral copies per milliliter (mL) of plasma and that of the other three patients completing 48 weeks, two had less than 50 copies/mL and one had less than 500 copies/mL. Agenerase was discovered by Vertex, which licensed the compound to Glaxo Wellcome (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: GLXO.L).

Ziagen was discovered and is being developed by Glaxo Wellcome. Vertex said these results were presented at the 12th World AIDS Conference in Geneva.

"The reductions in virus among patients in this study...were profound and appear to be durable," said Lynn Smiley, vice president of Antiviral Clinical Research at Glaxo Wellcome, in a statement.

"While this study is small and far from conclusive, the results appear to support the antiviral potency of both Ziagen and Agenerase, and provides clinical support for preliminary laboratory data which demonstrate an in vitro synergy between the two drugs," she said.

Ziagen and Agenerase are in phase III clinical development at Glaxo Wellcome as treatments for HIV and AIDS.
