Enzo says wins grant to test HIV drug

Reuters NewMedia, Inc.; Thursday April 30, 10:39 am EST

FARMINGDALE, N.Y., April 30 (Reuters) - Enzo Biochem Inc. Thursday said it received a phase one grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a drug to treat HIV patients in a new way.

The grant may last for up to six months and could lead to a larger phase two grant if early trials were successful, a company spokesman said.

The company declined to release the amount of the grant.

Enzo is attempting to develop a drug that will render certain cells resistent to the HIV virus, the spokesman said. "It's a totally new approach to the treatment of AIDS," he said.

The company said it will begin human testing of the drug under the phase one grant of its "genetic antisense medicine" in the next few months. Enzo conducts research and develops products based on molecular biology and genetic engineering.
