Scherer has been making soft gelatin, or softgel, capsules for Roche filled with the protease inhibitor Fortovase, since November, when the drug was introduced, Scherer controller Ron Pauli said. The multiyear deal, about which details were not available, soldified a long-term agreement, he said.
The market for protease inhibitors was more than $1 billion last year, Pauli said.
Fortovase in a softgel can be absorbed more easily by the human body than its predecessor Invirase, he said. The product will be made at Scherer's plant in Germany.
Troy, Mich.-based Scherer, a manufacturer of drug delivery systems, is the world's largest producer of softgels. It has 19 plants in 12 countries. Pharmaceutical firm Roche is based in Basel, Switzerland.
