Medizone delays HIV/AIDS treatment trial

Reuters NewMedia, Inc.; Tuesday December 2, 8:02 am EST

SALT LAKE CITY, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Medizone International Inc, a maker of a treatment for HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B, said Tuesday it would begin an aggressive clinical trial program in Italy during the second quarter -- instead of during the first quarter as originally planned -- because of significant design changes it says should enhance the product and future revenues.

The company said in a statement the initial Phase I trial conducted in healthy adults will test the safety, tolerance and toxicity of the Medizone, patented ``thin-film'' ozone technology and delivery system.

Phase II trials will follow, testing the efficacy of Medizone in treating HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B patients. The initial Phase II trials will address the pharmacokinetics of the current antiretroviral drugs ZDV, 3TC and Indinavir used on patients during concomitant administration of Medizone.

Medizone said it expects that the antiretroviral activity of Medizone, as demonstrated in previous animal studies, will prove to be an adjunct to existing therapies and will prolong and improve quality of life.

It also said an agreement with JRH Biosciences of Lenexa, Kan., announced April 22, has been cancelled.
