Stop the sex films, leader orders

Reuters NewMedia, Inc.; Friday December 5 11:01 AM EST

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Reuters) - Cambodian premier Hun Sen on Friday ordered cable television operators to stop broadcasting sex films, saying they were counterproductive to the government's fight against AIDS.

"This is a public order ... the Ministry of Information must tell the owners of the cable TV companies to immediately stop showing sex films. They encourage people," Hun Sen said in a speech to Ministry of Health officials.

"We spend only a little time broadcasting warnings on AIDS but there are six hours of sex films," he said.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is spreading rapidly in the Southeast Asian nation, health officials say.

Some cable television channels available in Phnom Penh show foreign sex films late at night.

The heavy-smoking premier defended cigarette advertising on television saying it brought in revenue, but he did promise the health workers he would quit the tobacco habit soon.

Hun Sen said he had vowed to his daughter that he would give up cigarettes.
