P&U hopes to launch AIDS drug in 98

STOCKHOLM, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Pharmacia & Upjohn (PHU.ST) (P&U) said on Tuesday it had applied for registration of its anti AIDS drug Rescriptor within the European Union (EU) with the hope to have it cleared in the second quarter of next year.

"We have applied for registration in the EU...we hope to launch the medicine in Europe in the middle of next year," P&U spokesman Anders Hedin told Reuters.

The company had earlier said it was aiming to get approval for the medicine by the first quarter of 1999.

Rescriptor is a medicine which is supposed to be used in a cocktail with other drugs, such as AZT, in order to repress the HIV virus that causes AIDS.
