Robbers threaten family with AIDS

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - Wednesday November 26 4:51 PM EST

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Three men who broke into a Sao Paulo apartment and threatened to infect the family with the AIDS virus, made off with $45,000 in jewelry and money, police said Wednesday.

The men, one of whom was carrying a gun, entered the complex Tuesday and forced a man in the elevator to take them to his apartment, a police spokesman said.

While inside, two of the men claimed to have HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and said they would infect the man and his mother and father if they refused to hand over their valuables.

The spokesman said the men did not say how they would have infected the family.

Brazil has a high incidence of AIDS, with an estimated 95,000 cases of HIV infection officially registered. But health authorities say as many as 450,000 of Brazil's 160 million people may be carrying the virus.
