ImmuCell discontinues development of drug

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - Friday October 24 2:46 PM EDT

PORTLAND, Maine, Oct 24 (Reuters) - ImmuCell Corp said Friday it has discontinued development of its CrytoGAM bovine anti-Cryptosporidium immunoglobins due to the difficulty in recruiting patients in its clinical trial.

The company said the recruitment problem is due to the impact that new HIV therapies are having on AIDS related infections.

In March 1996, ImmuCell decided not to spend any more internal money on the project, a company spokesman said. Project funding was coming from the Center for Special Immunology, an operator of primary clinics to treat HIV and AIDS patients with the intent of receiving royalties.

The amount spent on the research was not immediately available, but a spokesman said the center did not spend a large amount because patients were not enrolled.

The drug is aimed at treating or preventing cryptosporidoiosis, a parasite that causes diarrhea and dehydration in AIDS patents and other individuals with a compromised immunity system.

Positive developments in other therapies have reduced the need for CyptoGAM in AIDS treatment, a spokesman said.

ImmuCell Corp also said it has received a notice of allowance for a U.S. patent for its water test technology.
