Hybridon to stop development of HIV drug

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - Friday July 25 9:18 AM EDT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 25 (Reuter) - Hybridon Inc said Friday it had decided to stop further development of its first generation antisense drug, GEM91, based on a preliminary review of new data from a Phase II clinical trial of patients with advanced HIV infection.

The company said that in the Phase II trial, three of the nine subjects tested experienced decreases in platelet counts that required dose interruption.

In addition, the company said, a review of the data showed inconsistent responses to the treatment. Hybridon said it was proceeding with the development of GEM92, an advanced chemistry compound for the treatment of HIV. The drug is scheduled to enter clinical trials in October.

The company also said that it has withdrawn its shelf registration statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission relating to a primary offering of up to 5,000,000 shares of common stock.

The company further said that it plans to cut back its expenditure rate on a phased basis over the rest of 1997 through cost savings associated with stopping the development of GEM91 and by reducing or suspending selected programs.

It said it is in preliminary discussions with potential collaborative partners with respect to certain of its research and development programs.
