Agouron says JT is partner in HIV research

TOKYO, Dec 24 (Reuter) - Agouron Pharmaceuticals Inc and Japan Tobacco Inc 2914.T said that the anti-HIV drug for which Agouron had submitted a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was being jointly developed by the two companies.

U.S. pharmaceutical maker Agouron said on Monday that it had submitted a new drug application covering its HIV drug VIRACEPT to the FDA.

"VIRACEPT is being developed by Agouron in collaboration with the pharmaceutical division of Japan Tobacco Inc," the U.S. company said in a statement.

VIRACEPT is a synthetic chemical compound designed to inhibit the HIV protease-an enzyme that plays an essential role in the replication of HIV, the U.S. firm said.
