"We are pleased that Ontario's formulary has taken the action necessary to ensure that Zerit is available to all persons with AIDS and we hope that all (Canadian) provinces will follow in the near future," said Sophia Fourie, vice president, Scientific Affairs, Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Group, in a statement.
Zerit, or stavudine, also known as d4T, is an antiretroviral agent active against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Zerit belongs to a class of antiretroviral drugs called necleoside analogues.
It was discovered, developed and is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb. Zerit, which was cleared by Canada's Health Protection Board in March 1996 and has been available for commercial sale in Canada since July 1996, is indicated for the treatment of adults with HIV infection who have undergone prior treatment with Glaxo Wellcome GLXO.L Plc's zidovudine (AZT), Bristol-Meyers said.
Bristol-Meyers said the Ontario drug plan's inclusion of Zerit was an important step for Canada-wide provincial government drug plan coverage because 42 percent of reaported Canadian AIDS patients reside in Ontario.
