Paracelsian is seeking to market AndroVir, a herb-based product, as a dietary supplement for HIV-positive people.
The company said three of 16 people in the trial withdrew after experiencing a bitter taste and an allergic reaction. But there was a 38 percent median drop in HIV viral load of the 13 people who finished the trial, and a 31 percent median increase in CD4 cell counts, a measure of immune function, the company said.
The company said it will further test AndroVir to determine dosage regimens. The company said the product cost should be less than $1,000 a year, based on the dose ranges it is considering.
