Chiron Corp sees growth in viral load tests

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - Wednesday, 4 December 1996.

NEW YORK, Dec 4 (Reuter) - Chiron Corp said on Wednesday that sales of its tests for detecting levels of virus in patients' blood are showing strong growth.

"This business is literally exploding at this point in time," Edward Penhoet, Chiron's chief executive, told a Robertson Stephens Medical Conference.

He said end-user sales of Chiron's viral load tests would approach $100 million in 1996. He did not give a comparative figure.

Chiron and Roche Holding Ltd ROCZg.S makes sophisticated tests of viral loads that can provide an indication of how likely an HIV infected patient will progress to AIDS, how effective anti-viral drugs are working and early warning against drug resistance.

Penhoet said total potential annual sales for the tests could be over $200 million for HIV, $150 million for the hepatitis C virus and $50 million for hepatitis B virus.

The market is now shared equally by Chiron and Roche, he said.

Penhoet expected use of the tests to expand beyond infectious disease to be used in monitoring genetically-based diseases.
