World AIDS Day On Dec. 1

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - Friday 26 November 1996 2:43 PM EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- "One World, One Hope," is the theme designated by the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) for this year's World AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1.

Officials with the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say 190 countries will observe the day.

Activities are planned in a number of U.S. states, including events such as tree-lighting ceremonies, candlelight vigils, and art exhibits.

Information about the day is available from the CDC via its AIDS Hotline (800) 342-2437, and the CDC Home Page on the World Wide Web: http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/hiv-aids/worldaid/worldaid.htm.

CDC officials writing in the agency's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report note that the HIV pandemic has resulted in an estimated 27.9 million infections and 5.8 million deaths worldwide. SOURCE: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (1996;45(46):1006-1009)
