The Lao Dong trade union newspaper, quoting the latest data from the National AIDS Protection Committee, said 195 cases or two-thirds of Vietnam's total AIDS cases were found in the southern city.
In addition, Ho Chi Minh City was home to 1,598 people known to be infected with the HIV virus that causes AIDS. This is nearly half the national total.
Sunday's figures also showed a continuing sharp rise in the number of people in Vietnam afflicted with the deadly disease.
So far 3,375 people across the country have been identified as HIV victims, with 293 known AIDS cases and 134 deaths from the disease, the report said. Up until last August the total number of AIDS deaths in Vietnam was only 70.
Vietnam, one of the world's poorest countries, has indicated growing concern about the spread of AIDS among its 74 million population, and health workers say official figures for the infection are only the tip of an iceberg.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Khanh said last November the disease had become a ``serious social problem'' threatening social and economic development.
The United Nations Development Program has pledged $1 million to help Vietnam fight the disease.
The World Health Organization has warned that as many as 570,000 people could be infected with the AIDS virus by 1998.
The first known case of HIV infection in Vietnam was identified in December 1990.
