(RE) AIDS cases reported in two Beijing colleges

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - 24 Dec 1995

BEIJING, Dec 25 (Reuter) - AIDS has slipped into China's Ivory Tower with 10 students in two Beijing colleges found carrying the deadly Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, the Yangcheng Evening News said on Monday.

"It is extremently urgent to spread the programme of prevention of AIDS on China's university campuses," the newspaper quoted Zeng Yi, an AIDS expert, as saying.

The 10 Beijing students tested positive in spot checks, the newspaper said, but it was not clear whether they were infected with AIDS or HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that can lead to the deadly disease.

The State Education Commission started a special course to spread knowledge about prevention of AIDS on university campuses last September.

People aged 20-29 account for 51.69 percent of China's AIDS cases, those aged 16-19 account for 8.62 percent and 0.62 percent of patients are under 15 years old.

China diagnosed 820 people as infected with HIV in the first nine months of 1995 compared with 531 for the whole of 1994.

Since the first case was reported in 1985, 2,594 people have been diagnosed as HIV carriers.
