(RE) German AIDS group plays down breakthrough hopes

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - 7 Dec 1995

BERLIN (Reuter) - A German AIDS support group on Thursday warned against inflated hopes for an AIDS cure following a research breakthrough by a German institute.

"It's a long way from the laboratory to the hospital bed," said Hans-Josef Linkens of the Berlin-based AIDS-Hilfe group.

The Langen-based Paul-Ehrlich institute Wednesday said it had identified a protein produced in the body capable of halting the progression of HIV which causes AIDS.

Researchers themselves warned against "utopian" hopes for their discovery but said they wanted to start clinical trials on humans within a year.

The institute said the protein, called Interleukin 16, might be used in conjunction with other medications to delay the interval between HIV infection and development of AIDS.

Similar proteins to Interleukin 16 are already used to treat tumors and carry side effects such as diarrhoea and fever, the institute said.

Linkens noted that the Paul-Ehrlich institute's research was at a very early stage, since no tests had yet been carried out on animals or humans.

The institute has so far tested IL-16 only on cell cultures developed under laboratory conditions, but said it would start trials on mice and apes soon.
