"I'm kind of angry that we're still doing these things," Gere ssaid before an awards dinner late Thursday, the eve of World AIDS Day. "We've had too many World AIDS Days," he said.
Gere and Mary Fisher, an artist who spoke about her own battle with HIV to the Republican National Convention in 1992, were honored Thursday with awards by the Harvard AIDS Institute.
Past recipients include tennis great Arthur Ashe and Elizabeth Glaser, co-founder of the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Gere said that while five years ago there was a frenzy of activity surrounding AIDS, much of that had died down and AIDS had seemingly become an acceptable fact of life.
"We can cure it. No one has to die," Gere said. "It's a wise thing for the government to find a cure."
"I don't know what happened to our president," he said, referring to 1992 campaign promises by President Clinton to mount an effort to cure AIDS comparable to the effort behind the Manhattan atomic bomb project.
But Gere said since the disease costs $100,000 to $150,000 per victim and leaves many orphans behind, if AIDS is framed in terms of family and industry, "even the Republicans will get behind it."
