The clinic is run by the Panama Association Against AIDS (APAC) and will have a laboratory to test individuals for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes the disease, a counseling room, a clinic and a telephone hotline, Jose Cedeno, APAC's volunteer coordinator, told Reuters.
"This is the only center in Panama dedicated to treating those infected with HIV," Cedeno said.
AIDS was first recorded in Panama in 1984. Since that time, the number of individuals who have contracted AIDS has climbed to 992, according to official figures, although government statistics estimatethat between 20,000 and 30,000 individuals are infected with HIV and do not know it.
