(RE) China says 2,428 HIV-infected, 77 have AIDS

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - 25 Nov 1995

BEIJING (Reuter) - China has diagnosed 2,428 people as infected with the HIV virus, of whom 77 had developed AIDS, by the end of June 1995, the Workers' Daily said Saturday.

A total of 654 people were diagnosed with the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that causes AIDS in the first six months of 1995, more than in the whole of 1994, the newspaper said. It did not say how many cases there were in 1994.

The newspaper did not say, either, how many had died. The latest official figures put the number of people who had died of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) at 45 up to the end of 1994.

Experts say insufficient reporting and misdiagnosis mean the real number of Chinese infected with HIV could be between 50,000 and 100,000, the newspaper said.

Chinese officials have warned that the tiny number of AIDS cases could quadruple in the next decade through HIV contamination of China's largely unscreened blood supply.
