Prensa Latina quoted Manuel Hernandez, head of the national anti-AIDS campaign, as saying that 271 of those had died and 413 had developed full-blown AIDS.
Hernandez did not give comparative figures, but said the number of HIV-positive cases in Cuba had risen by 76 so far this year.
Cuba, with a population of 11 million, has kept its AIDS rate low through mass testing and a system of AIDS sanatoriums, where patients are cared for but are isolated from the rest of the population.
Since 1993 however authorities have allowed people with the disease who show responsible behavior to live normally in society.
Hernandez said 184 patients had left the sanatoriums in the past two years, but he added that many patients preferred to stay.
