The health department in the state of Western Australia said the Perth woman, who's identity and age are not being released, has had unprotected sex with five men she met at nightclubs since being diagnosed HIV-positive a month ago.
"It is an unusual step to confine someone but under the state's Health Act this situation is no different to any contagious disease," the state's chief health officer Dr Andrew Penman told Reuters on Thursday.
Penman said the woman's case had been publicized to help make the public aware of the growing problem of the spread of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) in the hetrosexual community.
AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
By killing or impairing cells of the immune system, HIV destroys the body's ability to fight infections and certain cancers.
