(RE) France tests thousands treated by doctor with AIDS

Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - 19 Oct 1995

PARIS (Reuter) - A Paris hospital said Thursday it planned to test more than 5,000 people for the AIDS virus after learning that one of its surgeons had been infected for 13 years.

The Saint-Germain-en-Laye Hospital Center in suburban Paris planned to send letters to at least 5,000 patients who may have come into contact with the doctor asking them to come in and be tested, hospital official Michel Pencard told reporters.

"They must take the test," Pencard said.

Health officials said the odds were extremely small that any of the doctor's patients had been infected.

They said an orthopedic surgeon was unknowingly infected during surgery on a female patient in May 1983. The disease was not diagnosed until earlier this year.
