"The previous inability of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to cause disease in nonhuman species has been a major impediment in determining the effectiveness of anti-HIV drugs and vaccines," said Bill Narayan a virologist who made the discovery.
"This model will greatly accelerate development and evaluation of ... vaccines," he added.
The virus developed is for HIV-1, the deadliest of the two AIDS viruses afflicting humans.
Until now, the announcement said, the best model science had for studying AIDS in non-human species was a monkey version of the virus which paralleled the actions of the human virus in monkeys but did not cause the damage seen in humans.
Narayan said he changed a virus that is a hybrid of monkey and human viruses originally developed at Harvard University.
The result was a revved-up virus that caused AIDS to develop quickly in a test monkey, he said. In theory a virus that causes the disease in test animals will better allow scientists to conduct experiments on the disease and its treament.
