$2.5 Billion sought for AIDS war

Reuters NewMedia - Monday, November 30, 1992

GENEVA - AIDS is spreading virtually unchecked in many parts of the world, and money for prevention programs must be increased 20 times over to slow its progress, the World Health Organization says.

In a message ahead of its World AIDS Day on Tuesday, the U.N. health agency estimates in a report published today that up to 40 million people will be infected by the end of the century with the HIV virus, which causes AIDS.

The agency calls for money for prevention campaigns in developing countries to be increased to $2.5 billion from $120 million last year.
