U.N. Agency warns of rapid spread of AIDS

Reuters NewMedia - Monday, November 30, 1992

Geneva - AIDS is spreading virtually unchecked in many parts of the world, and money for prevention programs must be multiplied 20 times to slow its progress, the World Health Organization says.

In a report published today, the U.N. health agency estimates that up to 40 million people will be infected with the HIV virus by the end of the century and calls for money for prevention campaigns in developing countries to be increased to $2.5 billion from $120 million spent last year.

"Global spending on prevention is dangerously inadequate and is allowing the virus that causes AIDS to spread virtually unchecked in many parts of the world," the organization said in a statement marking World AIDS Day tomorrow.

AIDS is spreading at a particularly alarming rate in Asia, said Dr. Michael Merson, director of WHO's global program on AIDS.

"We are seeing increases in parts of Asia the same as we had in Africa eight to 10 years ago," he said. "The battle is going to be won or lost in Asia."

There are now 1.5 million people in Asia infected with the HIV virus, which causes AIDS, compared with virtually none as recently as 1987.
