Massachusetts Recommends Condoms in High Schools

Reuters NewMedia, Inc.; Wednesday, August 28, 1991

Boston - Massachusetts' Department of Education recommended yesterday that the state's high schools make condoms easily available to students, the first such statewide measure in the country.

The nonbinding recommendation urges school districts to consider ways of bringing condoms to students, including through vending machines, to combat the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

The department also recommended that AIDS education programs be created for all grade levels and that high schools consider teaching students about how to use condoms.

"Due to the rising rate of HIV infection (which causes AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents, the need to address infection prevention in all ways possible is critical at this time," the department's policy statement said.
